The number of terms that are used to describe digital cameras and the functions they have seems to have increased because of how sophisticated they have become lately. These terms can be a little bit confusing especially for people who are unfamiliar with digital cameras. Here we will take a look at a few of the terms which are used when it comes to digital cameras.
- LCD – Liquid Crystal Display. This is the screen that is on the back of most digital cameras. You can use this screen to see the view you are about to take a picture of. You can also use the screen to look over any of the pictures that you have taken already. There are also other functions like menu selections available on the LCD screen.
- Memory Stick. This is where your images are stored until you remove them from the camera. Although it may be tempting to also store data on your memory card, this is not really a good idea because these memory cards can get corrupted.
- Burst Mode. Being able to take a number of photos in a short space of time is known as the burst mode and many digital cameras have this function. This is very useful for taking pictures of fast moving objects like cars speeding by.
- Having an autofocus function on a camera is good because it will bring any picture into focus without you having to fiddle with any buttons. This function is very useful, particularly for beginners.
- Having an F-stop function on your digital camera will enable you to control the camera’s aperture. The higher the f-stop the more light is allowed into the lens.
- You will probably hear the letters GB mentioned when talking about the memory which refers to gigabytes. You can normally take hundreds of photos with a 1GB memory card which is the minimum amount of memory that is usually found on memory cards nowadays.
- A JPEG is a type of photographic file and it is probably the most common one you will come across.
SD Cards are used in many products today. 2GB Micro SD cards happen to be a great example of this. Another one that is used nowadays is the R4i.
