Aspire 3004WLCi – A Quick Evaluation

I not too long ago found myself in will need of a new laptop. With a tight spending budget and moderate needs, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to uncover a item that would do what I wanted and still be in my cost range.

As a Network Technician along with a Net Designer, I needed a machine that would have sufficient storage to store all my software, projects for my clients, and nonetheless have the ability to handle an occasional temporary operating method backup from a client’s machine. The qualifying candidate also had to have a decent quantity of RAM along with a reasonably fast processor to keep up using the demands of multitasking and making use of Studio MX ’04 on a daily basis.

At first, I checked the auction web-sites, the refurbished outlets, plus the wholesale warehouses. I found several very good deals for below $500, but absolutely nothing that would deal with the processing load that Studio MX 2004 would location on it. The typical machine had 256MB of PC133 RAM, a 20GB HDD, as well as a 1.0GHz Pentium processor. Not too shabby for a student machine, but for day-to-day service in the fields I work in, not almost enough space or power to keep up with my demands.

I quickly realized that a new laptop could be needed as a way to meet my needs. Realizing that most decent laptops are priced at over $1,000, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot when I began shopping about. Nevertheless, to my surprise, a local retail chain had a particular running on the Acer Aspire 3004WLCi for $600 after a $150 rebate. This was the top finish of my budget, but the specs were far a lot more than what I believed I would find in this cost range.

OK, before I go into the Pros and Cons of this method, let me first say this… As a Network technician, I’m a bit of a stranger to Acer goods. I’ve noticed them just before, but I’ve never used them. In an business dominated by Dells and HPs, Acer seemed additional of an “off-brand” to me. With that in mind, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot for my cash. Fortunately, I was not disappointed, but neither was I completely incorrect.

Also, it’s worthy to note that prior to I utilised this machine, XP House was trashed in favor of XP Expert SP2 and I went by means of the program and performed a number of minor computer software efficiency tweaks on the operating system; all of which might be performed employing the native Windows XP Pro utilities.

Pros:
The Acer Aspire 3004 WLCi can be a reasonably powerful program for $600. Even at the original $750, this program is hard to beat in the performance department. The Sempron 3100+ processor is surprisingly quick and capable. It handled running Dreamweaver MX 2004, Fireworks MX 2004, Microsoft Word 2003, Microsoft OneNote 2003, Firefox 1.five, Net Explorer 6.0, Opera 8.five, Resize Browser, CPick, Java JRE, NOD32 Anti-Virus, Hotmail Popper, and many program services and minor utilities running inside the background simultaneously and did not complain or generate any unacceptable sustained CPU usage spikes. This is partly because of the generous and fast 512MB of DDR333 RAM, but even so, the processor surprised this long-time AMD user.

The 60GB tough drive delivers an ample amount of storage for common users. It’s on the lower end of my needs, but sufficiently large adequate to manage all my installed computer software, over 12GB of service software program needed for service calls, all my client projects, and it still has adequate space left over to easily accommodate a 20GB client system backup.

In addition, this method has a very very good Broadcom WiFi controller. In my 3 story townhouse, which has superb insulation, this method may be utilized anywhere in my dwelling with a signal strength of “Very Good” to “Excellent”.

The program is ergonomically laid out. I’ve rather huge hands, and most contemporary laptops are completely too modest for me to realistically use for any extended time frame. Normally, inside 20 or 30 minutes, my wrists and hands commence to ache from attempting to maintain a really unnatural position to be able to sort the documents I’m operating on. Not so with the Aspire 3000 series. These laptops have a reasonably massive chassis having a keypad that is practically ideal for somebody with massive hands. I’ve really located that I can variety practically as quick (roughly 35wpm) on this laptop as I can on my desktop program that has an ergonomic split keyboard (40wpm).

Cons:
If you’re searching for a Multimedia program, or should you plan to do any graphics intensive gaming, maintain on looking; this method just isn’t for you. Even using the widescreen WXGA display, this machine is not nicely suited for watching DVDs. The integrated video controller is only acceptable along with the monitor demands lots of “fiddling” with in order to discover the “just right” position for viewing. Furthermore, the glare on the display of this unit is terrible. I’ve discovered that in most brightly lit rooms I’m spending a lot more time straining my eyes to see past my very own reflection. Also, the viewing angle is unimpressive. Should you attempt to view the display from something better than 15 degrees in any path, you are either looking at a washed out or negative variation of the original. I’ve by no means been a huge fan of LCD. I’ve generally felt that a high quality CRT constantly looks much better, but this display is more reminiscent of a LCD of three years ago than a brand new product.

The integrated audio and video controllers are a definite sore spot also. I’ve always preferred expansion controllers over integrated controllers, but in this value range, I knew I would be stuck using the so-so good quality of an integrated controller. No surprise here. As usual, the good quality and efficiency is sub-par with these controllers, but for my needs, they do the job. Even so, if you plan on listening to any audio playback on this machine, you had better pack a good quality set of headphones. The tiny speakers on this machine are terrible sounding. Again, no big surprise.

Now, about battery life. I do not know who was in charge of defining this aspect of this machine, but they require a checkup from the neck up. Battery efficiency on this machine is certainly unacceptable. Unless you tune the program down considerably, it is really difficult to squeeze additional than an hour of actual usable time out of this system’s battery life. The manufacturer states that it’ll run for 1.five hours on the battery. I’ve never been ready to get additional than an hour out of the unit. In this day and age, this just isn’t acceptable. Fortunately, there are quite few occasions when I have to use this program exactly where I’m not close to a energy outlet.

My only other main complaint will be the lack of expandability of this method. You get two SODIM memory card slots (filled with 256MBx2 sticks from the factory), 3 USB 2.0 ports and also a Sort II PCMCIA slot on this machine, and that is it. No internal expansion capabilities, no firewire, no serial or parallel connections, and also you cannot swap out the combo drive effortlessly. Given the value range of this method, I’m really not surprised, but I’m a bit disappointed. Fortunately, you will find an abundance of USB adapters offered that permit me to do whatever is needed.

Summary:
Should you just need to have a simple program for work or school related tasks the Acer Aspire 3004WLCi can be a solid performer that will manage average use with ease. I would definitely advocate this unit to college college students or traveling professionals who need to have an inexpensive, user-friendly laptop, but who don’t plan on making use of their laptop on batteries very generally, or who usually do not intend on playing numerous games or movies. For the price conscious shoppers out there, this method is certainly worth the funds. In my humble opinion, you get much more than what you pay for, but not by a lot.
